During the month of June each year, London-based education and career consultancy firm Quacquarelli Symonds releases its annual ranking of Asian universities.
Singapore varsity institutions have consistently performed well in this renowned ranking exercise. This year, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has retained the top spot, whilst the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was ranked third.
The University of Hong Kong retained its second place, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was placed fourth.
Next week, the Times Higher Education magazine will release its equally prestigious ranking of global universities.
Such ranking exercises are increasingly used by students and parents to select the best institutions of higher learning. Academics are also using these rankings to decide where to find a job, and governments are also using these rankings to make funding decisions.
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has also embarked on a trial ranking exercise that assesses students’ critical thinking skills, plus competencies in specific disciplines.
