From next year, a new Exercise and Sports Science subject will replace Physical Education (PE) at the GCE O levels. The new subject will include biomechanics – the study of the structure and function of biological components using methods in classical Newtonian mechanics.
The introduction of an enhanced sports science curriculum is part of Singapore’s drive to raise the quality of sports expertise even at the school level.
The new subject, which will also include sports psychology, will contribute towards building a critical pool of individuals with expertise in sports.
Currently, only one percent of each cohort takes this subject. Selection for the course is stringent and the curriculum is demanding.
