The Ministry of Education has assured the public that the pending merger for junior colleges is not the result of more students opting to study at polytechnics.
The ministry expects the proportion of students going to junior colleges and polytechnics from each graduating secondary school cohort to remain steady.
Enrollment numbers at Singapore’s polytechnics have also been affected by falling birth rates, having dropped by a fifth in recent years.
The proportion of post-secondary students who chose JCs or the Millennia Institute remained at 41 per cent in the last five years. About 53 per cent chose a polytechnic, while 6 per cent entered the Institute of Technical Education.
