According to the Committee for Private Education (CPE), which regulates Singapore’s private education industry, a total of 25 private schools deregistered last year.
More private educational institutions are expected to deregister this year too, in view of stricter rules and higher standards of compliance imposed by CPE. The private schools that remain will be the more established ones with both a proven track record of transparency and integrity, as well as offering a credible plethora of courses relevant to Singapore’s industrial needs.
Higher standards therefore are good for the educational sector because they force industry players to up their game and weed out those who are unable or unwilling to adhere to high standards.
The need for high standards in the educational sector is especially relevant today in light of the Government’s SkillsFuture initiative which is designed to promote skills upgrading and lifelong learning for all Singaporeans regardless of educational background.
