Catholic Junior College (CJC) emerged tops in the third round of the Big Quiz, a current affairs contest jointly organised by the Straits Times and the Ministry of Education, and sponsored by the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation.
In each round of the competition, four teams made up of Singapore junior college students battle it out, and one junior college is crowned the winner of that round.
The fourth and fifth rounds of the quiz will take place on May 18 at River Valley High School, and July 20 at Raffles Institution respectively. Each winning team will be given $600 in vouchers.
Straits Times deputy editor Ignatius Low gave a keynote address to quiz participants. He spoke about press freedom and the independence of the media in light of recent global trends such as the rise of extremist activity.
During the question-and-answer session, in response to a student question on whether it was better to practise censorship or allow full press freedom, Mr Low said: “Unfortunately, when there is no regulation at all, especially on the Internet, people with ill intentions will flourish. Over the past 10 years, many countries, including the United States and Britain, have re-evaluated the value of ‘freedom’ in the light of terrorism, which is very real. It is something that has changed the balance of the debate.”
