More secondary school students are being given the opportunity to study subjects that involve a greater emphasis on hands-on learning.
These subjects, which include new additions to Singapore’s educational curriculum such as sports science, computing, and robotics, are part of an effort to infuse more real-world content into the N-level and O-level curricula.
The Ministry of Education has in recent years made a push for more applied learning. The goal is to train students to think critically and hone their powers of reasoning and deduction. These skills are critical in the new economy where grades alone are insufficient.
The ministry also collaborates with faculty members from the universities, polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education to identify and develop these applied subjects to ensure that they are aligned with varsity-level courses.
