The National University of Singapore has awarded its former President, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, aged 58, the title of University Professor.
The title is NUS’ highest academic appointment, and is given to senior faculty members who have made very significant contributions to the university.
Prof Tan Eng Chye succeeded Prof Tan Chorh Chuan as the university’s President in January this year.
Other distinguished NUS leaders who also hold the title of University Professor include Professor Lim Pin, Professor Chong Chi Tat, Professor Wang Gungwu and Professor Shih Choon Fong.
Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills), Mr Ong Ye Kung, said that Prof Tan Chorh Chuan is someone who “speaks softly but thinks deeply”, and “always goes for the higher goals in life”.
Professor Tan Chorh Chuan served as the university’s provost from 2004 before taking on the role of president at the end of 2008 until last year.
