Launched in March 2017, the SMU Access scheme offers grants and scholarships to needy and deserving students so that they will not be left behind.
The SMU grant, in conjunction with its scholarship component, the Quantedge Foundation Scholarship, ensures that the tuition fees of the recipients are fully covered throughout their four years of study at Singapore Management University, which can come up to as much as $45,000.
This year, 13 incoming SMU freshmen received the grant as well as its scholarship component. One of them was Ms Joyce Lee, who had been working since her Secondary School days and saving up for her higher education, but nonetheless was still concerned whether she would be able to afford tuition fees for the university.
Qualifying students for the SMU grant are assessed on household economic circumstances, such as per capita income and housing type.
The National University of Singapore also offers a wide range of bursaries, including the NUS Bursary carrying a quantum of at least $1,050 per year. Students living on campus can also apply for bursary grants ranging from $4,000 to $6,000 to defray the cost of accommodation.
