Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing recently urged Singapore’s university graduates to search for a higher meaning of perfection, rather than be persistently bogged down with the struggle for grades and jobs.
He encouraged students to find meaning in the work they do, and to do justice to their careers. In comparing this perspective to how people may approach a relationship, he even quoted the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, saying “Which is more important? Is it to marry the woman you love, or to love the woman you marry?”
Mr Chan was speaking to graduates from Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Applied Science during their graduation ceremony.
The minister also asked graduates to remain adaptable, citing the example of veterinary technology graduate Sim Xin Xian, who spent several weeks on a shrimp farm in Lampung province in Sumatra, overcoming cultural and language barriers, and eventually adjusting to life there.
A total of 5,800 Temasek Polytechnic students receive their diplomas from this year.
