A majority of young Singaporean students who participated in a recent survey by Singapore-based career portal start-up Glints said that schools were not doing enough to prepare them for the workforce in the future. More than half of the 1,000 respondents (56%) believe that what they are learning in school was inadequate for the future.
Nine in 10 respondents also felt that the workforce they will be graduating into will be radically different from today’s workforce.
The survey found that 78 per cent of respondents have actively searched outside of school for opportunities to gain skills for their future careers by signing up for competitions, internships and projects. Additionally, 82 per cent also said that they are willing to sacrifice their personal leisure and social time to take up these opportunities.
Unlike the 80s and 90s, having a degree these days no longer guarantees one a high paying job. Merely having a university degree no longer enables you to stand out from others.
