Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been appointed the next chairman of the Group of Thirty (G30). His term will begin on Jan 1, 2017, and will run for five years. He succeeds outgoing chairman and former European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet.
The Group of Thirty, established in 1978, is a private, nonprofit, Washington-based group which aims to foster a deeper understanding of international economic and financial issues and examine the choices available to policymakers.
G30’s international membership includes influential economists such as Paul Krugman, Lawrence Summers and Raghuram Rajan, former Federal Reserve governor Ben Bernanke, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, and People’s Bank of China governor Zhou Xiaochuan.
