SIM University (UniSIM) will become Singapore’s sixth autonomous university if a proposal by the Ministry of Education (MOE) is approved by the university’s board of trustees and the governing council of the Singapore Institute of Management.
The five autonomous universities are the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and Singapore Institute of Technology.
As an autonomous university, UniSIM will be publicly-funded and subject to government oversight.
Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung said that UniSIM will help craft a unique Singapore university, focusing on applied learning, targeted at both students and adult learners.
UniSIM’s full-time degree programmes are currently funded by MOE, and the students on the programme receive the same level of fee subsidies as the undergraduates in the other universities.
