Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (PLMGS) had humble beginnings when it first opened in 1917 on a 93,000 square foot piece of land in Boundary Road. It started as a school for boys and began with just three teachers.
In 1961, it became a fully girls’ school and took its current name. In 1986, it moved to its present-day site in Lorong Ah Soo, near Hougang.
Prominent alumni of PLMGS include top civil servant Lim Siong Guan, Nominated MP Chia Yong Yong, and former law minister E. W. Barker.
The school prides itself on being inclusive. Some of its students live in landed property estates, while others are from rental flats. The school has Normal classes alongside Express classes at each level.
PLMGS was made the Centre for Excellence for creative arts for schools in the East Zone in 2008. This means schools in the area can tap its resources and expertise in setting up performing arts co-curricular groups.
